Over the past years Cristiano Ronaldo has produced some of the best football of any player anywhere in the world - but not even he is safe from gaffer Sir Alex Ferguson’s infamous ‘hairdryer’ treatment.
Why many club maybe prepared to indulge their star [layer a little – especially the world-class performers that has never been the case at Manchester United under Ferguson.
Over the years a number of great player have felt wrath of the Old Trafford boss and despite their worth to the club, have been unceremoniously packed off elsewhere. Think Jaap Stam, David Backham, Ruud vaan Nistelrooy and Roy Keane the list goes on.
Ronaldo may not have committed the most heinous of crimes but Ferguson has rules for a season, in more then two decades in change, not even the most coveted of players have got away with stepping out of line.
Portuguese attacking ace Ronaldo had his wrists slapped earlier this month when he was caught using that ubiquitous device of then modern world – the mobile phone – when he should no have been.
Ferguson insists on a mobile phone ban at training and when Ronaldo was caught sending text message at the club’s Carrington complex he was fined £2,000 for each message he sent, £8000 in total.
A “United source” said: The Player all respect Sir Alex’s discipline. He is no a man to be messed with. But a few of the player have been sneaking their mobile phone on to the training pitch to send the add text message between sessions.
Fergie and his assistants have been cracking down on it big time recently. The insist that mobiles stay in lockers and should not be used until training is finished.
Ronaldo’s remarkable goal scoring form this season has perhaps been the chief reason behind the champions’ sustained bid to retain their title. Yet with the battle between themselves, Arsenal and Chelsea still close entering the final three month of campaign , Ferguson wants nothing less than a complete focus on the job at hand.
Ferguson has also banned mobile phone from team bus this season and has apparently taken a dim view of them being used during their train journeys to London for fixtures in the capital. Yet no even the hard-nosed scot, in this day and age, could cut off his squad from the outside world entirely.
Staff at Carrington are still contactable via pager so any urgent message can be relayed via reception. With Ronaldo now having presumably switched his phone off, Ferguson will hope that the only buzzing from him now will come on the filed.
