  • Second-half goal puts Liverpool into Champions League quarters lines
By admin on March 12th, 2008 | No Comments Comments

Fernando Torres scored a second-half goal to give visiting Liverpool a 1-0 victory over 10-man Inter Milan on Tuesday and send the Reds to the European Champions League quarter-finals.

Liverpool beat Inter Milan 1-0 in the San Siro on the night, and 3-0 on aggregate, to make it four English sides in the quarter-finals for the first time.

Torres controlled a cross inside the area and beat Inter goalkeeper Julio Cesar with a low shot in the 64th minute. Inter played the last 40 minutes a man down after defender Nicolas Burdisso was sent off with his second yellow card.

After Fernando Torres had grabbed the crucial second-half winner, Benitez added: ‘I do not have any preference now who we play next, but I would be more than happy to face an English side in the final.

Liverpool joins three other EPL teams Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal in the quarter-finals, making this the first time four teams from the same country have made it to the final eight.

FC Barcelona, AS Roma, Schalke and Fenerbahce also have made it to the quarter-finals.

  • Even Ronaldo can do wrong
    By admin on March 11th, 2008 | 1 Comment1 Comment Comments

Over the past years Cristiano Ronaldo has produced some of the best football of any player anywhere in the world - but not even he is safe from gaffer Sir Alex Ferguson’s infamous ‘hairdryer’ treatment.

Why many club maybe prepared to indulge their star [layer a little – especially the world-class performers that has never been the case at Manchester United under Ferguson.

Over the years a number of great player have felt wrath of the Old Trafford boss and despite their worth to the club, have been unceremoniously packed off elsewhere. Think Jaap Stam, David Backham, Ruud vaan Nistelrooy and Roy Keane the list goes on.

Ronaldo may not have committed the most heinous of crimes but Ferguson has rules for a season, in more then two decades in change, not even the most coveted of players have got away with stepping out of line.

Portuguese attacking ace Ronaldo had his wrists slapped earlier this month when he was caught using that ubiquitous device of then modern world – the mobile phone – when he should no have been.

Ferguson insists on a mobile phone ban at training and when Ronaldo was caught sending text message at the club’s Carrington complex he was fined £2,000 for each message he sent, £8000 in total.

A “United source” said: The Player all respect Sir Alex’s discipline. He is no a man to be messed with. But a few of the player have been sneaking their mobile phone on to the training pitch to send the add text message between sessions.

Fergie and his assistants have been cracking down on it big time recently. The insist that mobiles stay in lockers and should not be used until training is finished.

Ronaldo’s remarkable goal scoring form this season has perhaps been the chief reason behind the champions’ sustained bid to retain their title. Yet with the battle between themselves, Arsenal and Chelsea still close entering the final three month of campaign , Ferguson wants nothing less than a complete focus on the job at hand.

Ferguson has also banned mobile phone from team bus this season and has apparently taken a dim view of them being used during their train journeys to London for fixtures in the capital. Yet no even the hard-nosed scot, in this day and age, could cut off his squad from the outside world entirely.

Staff at Carrington are still contactable via pager so any urgent message can be relayed via reception. With Ronaldo now having presumably switched his phone off, Ferguson will hope that the only buzzing from him now will come on the filed.

  • Barnsley bounce Chelsea and Popey win at Old Trafford
By admin on March 9th, 2008 | No Comments Comments

Kayode Odejayi’s second-half header gave Barnsley a truly memorable victory over FA Cup holders Chelsea in a stunning tie at Oakwell.

The striker, who had not scored since September, rose highest in the penalty area to head home Martin Devaney’s cross and send the Yorkshire club to Wembley.
Chelsea piled on the pressure in an effort to find an equaliser but goalkeeper Luke Steele was rarely troubled as the Championship side clinched their place in the last four for the first time since 1912.

Barnsley, who have struggled for form since their famous victory at Anfield, showed no signs of nerves against the FA Cup holders at a packed out Oakwell.

Harry Redknapp’s Portsmouth produced another piece of FA Cup magic after clinching a magnificent victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Redknapp, whose West Ham team dumped United out of the competition in 2001, returned to haunt Sir Alex Ferguson’s side in an enthralling encounter between two fully committed sides.
Sulley Muntari’s 78th minute penalty was enough to give Portsmouth their first away win over United in 51 years and a day out at Wembley against all the odds.

With United guilty of wasting a number of gilt-edge chances, Pompey made the most of their one brief exertion into the United half in an exciting second half.

Niko Kranjcar escaped down the right and his through ball allowed Milan Baros a run on goal, only for substitute goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszscak to haul down the striker.

Kuszscak received his marching orders, forcing Rio Ferdinand to take his place in between the sticks.

But there was nothing the England defender could do to prevent Muntari scoring and sealing a memorable victory for a plucky Portsmouth side.

  • Sam hits back over Toon fitness jibes
By admin on March 6th, 2008 | No Comments Comments

Sam Allardyce has hit back at suggestions Newcastle were not fit enough during his eight-month spell in charge at St James’ Park.

Winger Damien Duff last week was quoted as saying fitness had improved under Kevin Keegan but Allardyce has described the allegation as an excuse as the Magpies continue their descent into the Premier League relegation zone.

    Allardyce said:
There wasn’t anything wrong with match fitness when I was there. That’s a bit of an excuse. Sometimes fitness is a mental thing. The fear factor can drain an awful lot out of players so that may be the problem at the moment. There is also a lack of confidence and it can boil down to that, not a lack of match fitness.

The former Bolton boss has pinpointed the upcoming games against Birmingham and Fulham as vital to the Magpies’ fortunes.

    Allardyce continued:
They have experienced and talented players but they must get a result pretty soon. They have Birmingham and Fulham in the next few games and they could be the big matches – the turning point for Kevin and the team.

Allardyce has also targeted a summer return to management, saying:
I would like to come back, if I had my way, in the summer. But we’ll have to wait and see what turns up.

  • Cannavaro : Ramos need to learn
By admin on March 6th, 2008 | No Comments Comments

Real Madrid defender Fabio Cannavaro says teammate Sergio Ramos still has much to learn after his dismissal on Saturday night at Recreativo Huelva.

    Cannavaro said:
Sergio has a lot of strength and always seems to play well, but he isn’t always a clean tackler, He has to learn to control that temper.

Sergio has some extraordinary qualities, but lacks a lot also when you compare him with Paolo Maldini. For me, Maldini is the best footballer I have played with alongside Roberto Baggio.

  • Defoe loving life at Pompey
By admin on March 6th, 2008 | No Comments Comments

Portsmouth striker Jermain Defoe is delighted with the start he has made at Fratton Park.

Defoe has scored three goals in four matches since his January transfer-deadline day move from Tottenham Hotspur and the former West Ham United forward revealed he has been impressed by the quality in the Pompey squad.

The England international told the club’s official website:

When I got the phone call before I came here I looked at the players and saw how much quality there was. But even then you don’t realise how good they are until you actually play with them. So it’s really good to be at a club like this. It’s a great opportunity for me. I’m really enjoying it here. I’m enjoying every game and enjoying training. It’s important to get off to a good start when you join a new club, because it helps with the confidence. So I just want to keep going, to not get complacent and to keep scoring goals and help us push up the league. I think we can go places.

Harry Redknapp’s side are currently ninth in the Barclays Premier League but only four points off sixth-placed Aston Villa.

    And Defoe added:

I think Europe is still achievable, with the fixtures we’ve got left. We’ve got six home games left from the last 10 games and that’s a big factor.

  • Chelsea show their own style
By admin on March 6th, 2008 | No Comments Comments
Chelsea eased into the Champions League quarter-finals after a comfortable 3-0 win over Olympiacos at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday evening., with the goals coming from Michael Ballack, Frank Lampard and Salomon Kalou. After 25 minutes on the clock Chelsea had doubled their lead after Ballack’s shot on the angle was parried by the goalkeeper Antonios Nikopolidis and into the path of Lampard who made no mistake from close range.

Grant’s men made it 3-0 soon after the restart when Lampard’s corner from the left was not dealt with and converted from close range by Salomon Kalou (48).

    Gran said:
I have confidence in my team. From day one I have had full confidence in the team, even though most of the people didn’t believe we would have a good year. So far it has been a good development and that pleases me more than the results. We know it was a bad day in the League Cup final. We were only team from the big four to make the final. We showed since then character and good attitude. That is what is important. It’s what I like. Goalkeeper Peter Cech missed the game with an ankle injury and will require a scan. Carlo Cudicini deputised but was not called into action until late on. ‘I think Carlo, in any game he played, was very good this year. Carlo was very good today. He is a good goalkeeper. For two or three weeks we didn’t have any injured players. Peter has injured in his ankle in training, we hope it won’t be for long.

Lampard picked up a second-half booking for diving but that was the only sour point on an evening when Chelsea joined Arsenal in the last eight.

    Lampard said on Sky Sports:
I was asking for a penalty but I don’t mind not being given a penalty. But to call me a diver, that’s not the way I play and it’s unfortunate because it puts me on a yellow.’

After booking a quarter-final berth with all four English teams still in the competition, lampard added:
What will be will be. If all four of us go through – and Liverpool are in a good position – there will be a great chance of an all English match. It’s obviously great for England if we’re all in there but if we draw one we will have to do deal with it.

Lampard and Ballack in midfield meant Michael Essien was on the bench. Nicolas Anelka was also a substitute, with Didier Drogba playing in attack.

    Grant add again:
We can play with more than one formation and they can play together. Nico was the best player on Saturday, but we are trying to use all the players. Some players are more fresh than others. It’s very important when you have so many big games. We continue like this, so we will use all the players.

Olympiacos coach Panagiotis Lemonis felt his side were already undone after their terrible start. Lemonis said:
After it was 2-0, obviously it was very difficult. I said the first 20 minutes would be important. ‘It was proved that we couldn’t respond. But we played against a very experienced team.’ Chelsea captain John Terry dedicated the victory to Frank Steer, from the club’s backroom staff, whose mother has passed away.
