Manchester United’s players got the preseason workout they were looking for Saturday in a 1-1 draw with South Africa’s Kaizer Chiefs.

The Chiefs scored first in the friendly match at Newlands Stadium when Ghanaian defender Jonathan Quartey converted a 38th-minute penalty kick after Gary Neville fouled Siphiwe Tshabalala.

United equalized in the 60th when midfielder Chris Eagles headed home a cross from Carlos Tevez. Chiefs’ goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune was wrongfooted as the ball took a deflection off captain Jimmy Tau.

Liverpool have continued their winning start to pre-season with a 2-1 victory over FC Lucerne. goals scored by Brazil midfielder Lucas and Ukraine forward Andriy Voronin. The work being carried out during the Swiss training camp is clearly paying dividends, with the Reds producing some fine interplay in the opposition half.

Reds boss Rafael Benitez handed new goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri the gloves for his debut, while fellow newcomer Philipp Degen was also in a first XI which included Spaniard Danny Pacheco but not Steven Gerrard, who was left on the bench.

Australia warm-up game ahead of the Olympics, but the Kiwis were no pushovers. Mark Milligan headed the Socceroos in the lead, only for Jeremy Brockie to equalise with a header. Kristian Sarkies put Australia 2-1 up with a fine volley, only for Jeremy Brockie to notch his second of the game with a fabulous solo goal in which he went past four players. Milligan stole the victory with a tidy finish following a free-kick.

France ‘98 3 – World XI 3
Zidane equalised in the second half before Pauleta volleyed home an incredible shot to put the visitors 2-1 ahead. Ludovic Giuly, not part of the winning ‘98 team, got France level again before late goals from Davor Suker

Aberdeen 0 – Manchester United 2

The hosts, celebrating the 25th anniversary of winning the European Cup Winners’ Cup under Sir Alex Ferguson, piled plenty of pressure on the Champions League holders, and were unfortunate to see a first-half goal from Darren Mackie ruled out for offside.

United’s class told in the latter stages of the first half and much of the first, however, and Michael Carrick bagged the first after Rooney had been brought down in the box. Wayne Rooney scored the second with a fine header from a cross by Darren Fletcher.

Mezzocorona 1 – Juventus 7

Juve’s first pre-season match of the summer. Their new signing Amuari stealing all the plaudits with a five goal haul on his debut. The other two Juve goals were scored by youngsters Pasquato and Esposito, while D’Acampo scored the consolation goal for the hosts.
