  • Barnsley bounce Chelsea and Popey win at Old Trafford
By admin on March 9th, 2008 | No Comments Comments

Kayode Odejayi’s second-half header gave Barnsley a truly memorable victory over FA Cup holders Chelsea in a stunning tie at Oakwell.

The striker, who had not scored since September, rose highest in the penalty area to head home Martin Devaney’s cross and send the Yorkshire club to Wembley.
Chelsea piled on the pressure in an effort to find an equaliser but goalkeeper Luke Steele was rarely troubled as the Championship side clinched their place in the last four for the first time since 1912.

Barnsley, who have struggled for form since their famous victory at Anfield, showed no signs of nerves against the FA Cup holders at a packed out Oakwell.

Harry Redknapp’s Portsmouth produced another piece of FA Cup magic after clinching a magnificent victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Redknapp, whose West Ham team dumped United out of the competition in 2001, returned to haunt Sir Alex Ferguson’s side in an enthralling encounter between two fully committed sides.
Sulley Muntari’s 78th minute penalty was enough to give Portsmouth their first away win over United in 51 years and a day out at Wembley against all the odds.

With United guilty of wasting a number of gilt-edge chances, Pompey made the most of their one brief exertion into the United half in an exciting second half.

Niko Kranjcar escaped down the right and his through ball allowed Milan Baros a run on goal, only for substitute goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszscak to haul down the striker.

Kuszscak received his marching orders, forcing Rio Ferdinand to take his place in between the sticks.

But there was nothing the England defender could do to prevent Muntari scoring and sealing a memorable victory for a plucky Portsmouth side.
