An artificial pitch and an in-form Andrei Arshavin could pose the biggest challenges for Germany as they seek to secure automatic World Cup qualification in their top-of-the-table clash with Russia on Saturday.

The Germans lead Russia by a point in Group Four and will clinch a place at next year’s finals with a win in Moscow while a draw would also leave them in the driving seat as they host eliminated Finland in their last match in Hamburg.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that he has put and end to his pursuit of Udinese midfielder Gokhan Inler and will target a player with “special class” instead.

Asked if he was interested in signing the talented 24-year-old midfielder as a replacement for Mathieu Flamini, who joined AC Milan in the summer, Wenger said: “Yes, in the summer. But not any more.”

The Arsenal boss’ comments has lead to much speculation in the UK press that he was alluding to a £20 million move for Russian star Andrei Arshavin.

Arshavin has already represented Zenit St Petersburg in this season’s Champions League and Wenger is reported to be an admirer of the want-away 27-year-old.

The arrival of the Russian forward would provide a much needed morale boost to Wenger’s young squad following the long-term loss of injured skipper Cesc Fabregas.

Captain Ballack was in the right place to double Germany’s lead 20 minutes later by side-footing home Bastian Schweinsteiger’s clever cross with Akinfeyev stranded.

    Greece 0 – 1 Russia
    Konstatin Zurianov (33)

Greece lost their grip on the European Championship title after Konstantin Zyryanov’s winner earned victory for Russia in Salzburg and knocked out the holders.

Otto Rehhagel’s men were never given much hope of making history and becoming the first country to defend the title, and their hopes lasted two matches.

Criticised for being negative, there was at least some adventure after Zyryanov took advantage of woeful goalkeeping from Antonis Nikopolidis – but it was too little, too late.
